New Zealand the new hotspot for Indian students

New Zealand is rapidly gaining popularity among Indian students pursuing higher education, thanks to its dynamic academic offerings, student-focused policies, and high-quality yet affordable lifestyle, reported gujaratsamachar.com.

Enrolment numbers surged in 2024, surpassing the previous year in just two terms.

According to the New Zealand Education Department, 73,535 international students enrolled between January and August 2024—outpacing total enrolments in 2023.

This sharp rise signals growing interest, particularly from Indian students drawn to the country’s globally recognised education system and safety standards.

New Zealand is considered a cost-effective alternative to other leading study destinations such as the US, UK, and Australia. Tuition fees for Indian students range widely, depending on the program:

  • Undergraduate degrees: NZD 25,000–NZD 45,000 (₹12.5 lakh–₹22.5 lakh) annually
  • Postgraduate programs: NZD 20,000–NZD 37,000 (₹10 lakh–₹18.5 lakh) per year
  • Specialised programs like medicine and veterinary science may cost more

Scholarships and inclusive campuses add to New Zealand’s appeal

Multiple scholarship opportunities for Indian students—such as Commonwealth Scholarships, Doctoral Research Scholarships, Excellence Awards, and the SEG Scholarship—make studying in New Zealand more financially accessible.

Living costs also remain manageable:

  • On-campus housing: NZD 215–NZD 555 (₹10,750–₹27,750) per week
  • Off-campus shared flats: NZD 120–NZD 600 (₹6,000–₹30,000) per week
  • Annual living expenses:

o          Smaller cities: NZD 15,000–NZD 20,000 (₹7.5 lakh–₹10 lakh)

o          Larger cities: NZD 18,000–NZD 25,000 (₹9 lakh–₹12.5 lakh)

Weekly food expenses generally fall between NZD 80–NZD 120 (₹4,000–₹6,000).

Notably, IDP Education data reveals that the number of Indian female students doubled between 2023 and 2024, a testament to New Zealand’s reputation for being a safe, inclusive, and academically supportive destination.
