26-year-old Singapore citizen of Indian origin says he prefers India’s vibrancy over Singapore’s monotony, plans to relocate and invest ₹1 crore in Chennai
A 26-year-old Non-Resident Indian (NRI) living in Singapore has announced plans to return to India and invest nearly ₹1 crore in Chennai, saying he would rather live in a “chaotic India” than in the “monotonous” environment of Singapore, reported ndtv.com.
The NRI, who moved to Singapore in 2007, said he had completed his education and obtained citizenship for career reasons but now found life there “too structured.” “Despite India having its cons, I veer more towards living closer to my family. I would rather live in chaotic India than elsewhere,” he wrote.
He added that he was facing an “identity crisis” and had decided to return to India within the next five years, acknowledging the challenges that might come with relocation.
The young professional, who became a Singapore citizen in 2021, shared his decision in a Reddit post titled “Returning to Chennai”, where he expressed a longing to live closer to family and reconnect with his Indian roots
Outlining his investment plans, he said, “I was thinking of investing in commercial property for under ₹70 lakh and in a business for ₹30 lakh — basically under ₹1 crore without taking loans or with minimal borrowing — in or near Chennai or Kanchipuram.”
The NRI’s post quickly went viral, sparking a wide range of reactions online. While some users praised his decision to reconnect with his homeland, others cautioned him about the realities of returning after years abroad.
One Reddit user commented, “It’s only human to long for what we do not have… All the best for your soul searching.” Another added, “You’ll do great in India. Worst case, you can always go back.”
Some advised him not to renounce his Singapore citizenship. “You want some drama in life. Just one recommendation — never give up your Singapore passport,” one person quipped.
This discussion echoes a growing trend among NRIs seeking to return to India for emotional fulfillment and entrepreneurial opportunities, even as others continue to migrate westward for professional reasons.
