Ludhiana cybercrime police book accused who posed as investment agent promising high returns
An NRI from Canada was cheated of ₹24.57 lakh in a fraudulent share market investment scheme, prompting police action in Ludhiana. The victim, Bhawandeep Singh from Gurreh village, was visiting home when he received a WhatsApp call from a woman claiming to be a representative of “Share India.” She assured him that investing with the company would double his returns in a short period, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Accused lured victim with high-return promise, then disappeared with the money
Enticed by the prospect of huge profits, Singh transferred ₹24.57 lakh for the purported investment. However, no profits were received, and repeated calls to the accused went unanswered. Realising he had been conned, Singh lodged a complaint with the cyber crime police.
ASI Jagroop Singh confirmed that a case under Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (cheating-related offences) has been registered against the unidentified accused. Investigators are tracing the phone numbers and bank accounts involved in the scam.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant against online investment scams and to verify the credentials of any company or representative before transferring funds. Cyber crime units are also conducting awareness drives in schools, colleges, and through social media to educate the public on such fraudulent tactics.
