Woman alleges dowry harassment, abuse, and illegal divorce by her husband and in-laws
A Mumbai-based woman has lodged a complaint against her NRI husband and in-laws, accusing them of dowry harassment and divorcing her through triple talaq during a video call , reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Victim alleges abuse, jewellery seizure, and denial of entry upon return to the UK
The victim, a Seawoods resident, married Aaqib Bhatiwala in 2022 as per Muslim customs. Initially harmonious, her marriage soured after moving into her in-laws’ Wadala home, where harassment allegedly began. The abuse escalated after she traveled to the UK with her husband and in-laws.
Following a domestic dispute, the victim claims her husband confiscated her jewellery and sent her back to India, cutting all communication. Later, she received a divorce via triple talaq over a video call.
When she returned to the UK, she alleges she was refused entry into her husband’s home.
The NRI Sagar Police in Mumbai have registered charges under the Muslim Women (Protection of Marriage Rights) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Triple talaq, once permissible under Islamic law, was deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 2017. In 2019, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act criminalized the practice, making violators liable for up to three years of imprisonment. Authorities are currently investigating the case.
