Lord Swraj Paul, founder of Caparo Group and a life peer in the UK House of Lords, leaves behind a legacy of business success and philanthropy
Renowned NRI industrialist and philanthropist Lord Swraj Paul passed away in London on Thursday evening at the age of 94. His family confirmed that he had recently been hospitalised after falling ill.
Lord Paul moved to the UK in the 1960s for the treatment of his daughter Ambika, who tragically passed away from cancer. In her memory, he established the Ambika Paul Foundation, dedicated to supporting children and youth through education and welfare initiatives.
Born in Jalandhar, Punjab, in 1931, Lord Paul rose to become one of Britain’s most influential entrepreneurs and philanthropists, remembered for his resilience and service.
He went on to build a global business empire through the Caparo Group of industries and was made a life peer in the UK House of Lords in 1996. Over the years, he served on several key committees focusing on trade, education, and entrepreneurship.
Beyond business, Lord Paul was deeply committed to philanthropy. He was instrumental in saving the London Zoo, particularly championing its children’s section, later renamed the Ambika Paul Children’s Zoo. His contributions extended across education, healthcare, and conservation, shaping countless lives.
Despite personal tragedies, including the loss of his daughter Ambika, son Angad in 2015, and wife Aruna in 2022, Lord Paul remained dedicated to his mission of service and philanthropy.
He will be remembered as a pioneer who bridged industry, politics, and social causes, leaving behind a lasting global legacy.
