NRI marital desertions on the rise in Haryana

Police target absconding husbands with 60 look out circulars

The growing issue of non-resident Indian (NRI) husbands abandoning their wives after marriage is escalating in Haryana. In Karnal district alone, 55 cases have been registered over the past five years, prompting police to issue 60 look out circulars (LOCs) against absconding NRI husbands and their family members, reported tribuneindia.com.

Haryana police are intensifying efforts to track NRI husbands abandoning their wives by issuing LOCs to prevent their escape or ensure their return.

LOCs are legal directives issued to prevent suspects from leaving the country or to detain them upon arrival. This ensures the accused appear before Indian courts to face legal proceedings.

Heartbreaking Stories of Abandoned Wives

Several women allege that their NRI husbands left them shortly after marriage, cutting off all communication and leaving them in severe emotional, social, and financial distress.

Sunita (name changed), 33, is one such victim. Her husband left for Cyprus five years ago, promising to return soon but later severed all contact. “He stopped answering my calls. I have been waiting endlessly,” she shared. After years of uncertainty, the Women Police Station in Karnal issued an LOC against her husband.

“We take such cases seriously and register FIRs promptly. LOCs are crucial to ensure these men are intercepted at airports and held accountable.

“I have investigated the case and issued the LOC. It is vital that such men face legal consequences for abandoning their wives,” said Satvinder Kaur, SHO, Women Police Station, Karnal.

On January 16, Haryana State Women Commission chairperson Renu Bhatia visited Karnal to review cases involving NRI husbands. During her visit, three women came forward to share their grievances.

Authorities Vow Strict Action

Bhatia assured the victims of stringent measures, including the possibility of deportation. “We will not hesitate to initiate deportation procedures if needed. Such men cannot escape responsibility,” she stated. She also urged the families of accused NRI husbands to cooperate with the investigation to avoid further legal complications.

In another distressing case, a woman revealed that her husband left for the UK just six months after their wedding and has not contacted her since. “I tried everything—calls, emails, even reaching out to his friends—but there’s been no response. I want justice now,” she said.

Police Intensify Tracking Efforts

The Karnal Police are working closely with immigration authorities to ensure all LOCs remain active and effective.
