Police launch massive hunt, issue lookout circular to prevent accused’s escape
Panic spread across Phillaur on Saturday evening when an NRI youth allegedly opened fire outside the residence of social worker Mandeep Singh Dosanjh, injuring one of his aides. The shocking incident took place at Atwal Colony, near Dosanjh’s home, popularly known as Atwal House, reported tribuneindia.com.
The accused, identified as Rahul from Lakkar Mandi, recently returned from abroad and had approached Dosanjh under the pretext of purchasing property before suddenly opening fire.
According to eyewitnesses, Rahul requested Dosanjh to step outside for a discussion about the property. Moments later, he drew a pistol and aimed it at the social worker. Dosanjh’s friend, Sanjeev Kumar alias Pandit, intervened and tried to overpower him. In the ensuing scuffle, Rahul fired a shot that struck Pandit in the leg before fleeing in an SUV with an accomplice.
Locals and police personnel rushed the injured to Phillaur Civil Hospital, where doctors later referred him to Ludhiana for advanced treatment. His condition remains critical but stable.
Police teams led by DSP Sarwan Singh Bal and SHO Aman Saini quickly reached the scene, reviewed CCTV footage, and set up checkpoints across the district to trace the fleeing suspect
“The accused Rahul is an NRI who had recently returned to India. His identity has been confirmed, and a lookout circular has been issued across all airports,” DSP Bal said.
Mandeep Dosanjh, known in the region for his philanthropic work, recounted the ordeal: “Rahul came pretending to buy my house. When I stepped out, he suddenly aimed a gun at me. My associate Pandit tried to stop him but was shot instead.”
The police have registered a case of attempt to murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Multiple teams are conducting raids in Phillaur and nearby areas to locate the accused. Authorities have also appealed to the public for information related to Rahul or the vehicle used in the crime.
The attack has sparked concern among locals, as Dosanjh is widely respected for his social and charitable initiatives. Police have assured swift action and continue to investigate the motive behind the shooting.
