Doctors at Father Muller Medical College Hospital in Mangaluru have successfully saved the forearm of a 58-year-old non-resident Indian (NRI) who suffered severe chemical burns in a workplace accident in Dubai.

The man sustained deep injuries when sulphuric acid accidentally spilled on his arm while he was on duty. Due to the seriousness of the burns, he was later flown to India for specialised medical care. On arrival, the hospital’s plastic surgery team began urgent treatment to prevent permanent damage and loss of function.

  • Hospital officials said the patient underwent a series of carefully planned procedures

  • These included repeated surgical cleaning to remove damaged tissue, followed by vacuum-assisted closure therapy to help the wounds heal and reduce the risk of infection

  • Once the affected area was stabilised, doctors performed skin grafting to reconstruct the damaged skin and restore movement in the arm

The coordinated and timely efforts of the medical team helped salvage the limb and significantly improve the patient’s recovery prospects. The patient expressed heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nursing staff for their skill, dedication and compassionate care.

The plastic surgery team included senior consultants Dr Aravind L Rao and Dr Satish Bhat, along with Dr Akanksha Rajpoot and Dr Karthik Aithal, supported by a team of residents. Anaesthesia services were provided by specialists from the Department of Anaesthesia, ensuring the patient’s safety during the multiple procedures.
