Many NRIs who came back to India during peak of Covid-19 pandemic from New Zealand are still stuck in India because New Zealand government reportedly has stopped processing and clearing all foreign files.

Among them are students, employees and businessmen. Many of them have got their temporary visas expired and they are in a fix about their studies, work, businesses and even property which they had to leave in a hurry due to the situation at that time.

A group of NRIs from New Zealand did a protest at Jantar Mantar on Monday to lodge their protest and let the authorities in India and New Zealand take a call on their demand.

According to a PTI report, the protesters were led by Jagdeep Singh, an employee in a healthcare company in New Zealand. He demanded that he and others like him be allowed to return to the island country. Singh had come to India in 2020 with his newborn daughter to meet the family but got stuck due to travel restrictions in the wake of massive spread of Covid pandemic.

“There are many protesting students who are not able to return to complete their studies. Our work, property, everything is there. In the last one year, 80 percent of people’s temporary visas have expired and the New Zealand government has stopped the process of clearing all foreign files.”

The PTI quoted Singh, who said, “This is the situation of all the people who returned to India due to various personal reasons. There are many protesting students who are not able to return to complete their studies. Our work, property, everything is there. In the last one year, 80 percent of people’s temporary visas have expired and the New Zealand government has stopped the process of clearing all foreign files.”

He said, “I had come with my wife after the birth of my daughter but got stuck here due to Kovid-19. Meanwhile, our temporary visa has expired and now neither India nor the New Zealand government is helping us return home.

Singh told that this is the situation of all the people who returned to India due to various personal reasons. “There are many protesting students who are not able to return to complete their studies. Our work, property, everything is there. In the last one year, 80 percent of people’s temporary visas have expired and the New Zealand government has stopped the process of clearing all foreign files.

Singh wrote letters to the Indian government and the New Zealand High Commission but nothing was achieved. “From now on every day we will protest till we get some assurance from the Government of India and the New Zealand High Commission,” he said.
