- “Everything in India is cheaper”
- Video of an NRI comparing prices between India and Germany sparks massive online debate on cost of living
A video of an Indian man who recently returned from Germany has gone viral for his astonished reaction to grocery prices in India. The clip, filmed by his sister inside a local supermarket, captures the NRI repeatedly expressing disbelief at how affordable everyday essentials are compared to what he paid abroad, reported financialexpress.com.
The Instagram reel opens with the text: “POV: when everything in India is cheaper than in the country. Bro just returned from Germany.” As the man browses the aisles, he picks up a box of Tic Tac mints priced at ₹20 and exclaims, “So cheap! In Germany, I pay ₹200 for the same thing.”
His surprise continues when he spots a 2.25-litre Coca-Cola bottle costing ₹95, noting that in Germany, a two-litre bottle sells for ₹250. He also points out that a one-litre Frooti costs ₹100 — a drink he says isn’t even available abroad.
From Tic Tacs to Coca-Cola — NRI’s price shock in Indian grocery store wins internet.
At the checkout counter, he’s left stunned when the total bill amounts to around ₹1,273 (€12.5), remarking that the same groceries would have cost him several times more in Germany.
The video quickly went viral, with social media users flooding the comments section. Many said they could relate to his experience, while others discussed the concept of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) — the economic principle explaining why goods may seem cheaper in some countries despite income differences.
One user wrote, “I can totally relate… Here in Korea, we pay 3x for Indian groceries.” Another added, “Concept of Purchasing Power Parity — everyone should read about it,” while others reacted humorously, calling the man’s reaction “so real” and “living in a simulator.”
