On the international front, Gandhi underscored the vital role of the Indian diaspora as a “bridge” between India and the United States
During a recent address to the Indian diaspora in Dallas, Texas, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for their regressive stance on women’s roles in Indian society. reported PTI.
According to Gandhi, these organizations propagate the belief that women should be confined to domestic responsibilities, such as staying at home and cooking, which limits their potential. In contrast, Gandhi emphasized his support for women’s empowerment, including increased participation in politics and financial support for women entrepreneurs.
Gandhi’s address, his first public interaction with the Indian diaspora after becoming Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, highlighted the need for a cultural shift in how Indian men view women. He also reiterated his support for the women’s reservation bill, stating that women deserve to be treated as equals in all spheres.
Gandhi urged Indian Americans to continue fostering connections between both nations, as the future of the relationship between these two global powers will have a significant impact on both countries
“The BJP and RSS believe women should be restricted to a certain role, while we believe that women should be free to aspire to whatever they want,” Gandhi stated, underscoring the need for equal opportunities for women.
The Congress leader also outlined a broader ideological difference between the RSS and his party, highlighting that the RSS envisions India as a monolithic entity, while Congress believes in a “multiplicity of ideas.” Drawing a parallel to the United States, Gandhi argued for the inclusion of all people, regardless of caste, religion, or language, in India’s future.
Addressing concerns about India’s constitutional integrity, Gandhi criticized the BJP’s governance, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of attacking India’s Constitution by undermining regional traditions, languages, and cultures. He linked the BJP’s actions to a broader disrespect for India’s diversity, stating, “The Constitution protects our multiplicity. Attacking the Constitution is attacking our religions and traditions.”
Gandhi concluded by calling for the restoration of love, respect, and humility in Indian politics, values he believes are missing in the current political climate. He highlighted that the results of recent elections indicated the people’s rejection of authoritarianism, as Indians were no longer afraid of the BJP or its leadership. He framed the election outcome as a victory for democracy and a pushback against efforts to erode the Constitution.
