India’s e-Jagriti platform empowers NRIs to pursue property and service disputes remotely, bridging the gap between continents
A non-resident Indian (NRI) based in Shanghai is among 56 NRIs currently leveraging the government’s e-Jagriti platform to resolve consumer complaints related to properties and services in India. The initiative demonstrates how technology is transforming access to justice for Indians living abroad, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Consumer Affairs Ministry Secretary Nidhi Khare highlighted a Shanghai-based woman who successfully managed her property dispute online without hiring an advocate, participating entirely from abroad.
Speaking at a FICCI event, Khare explained that the platform conducts hearings through video conferencing, enabling complainants to follow their cases remotely.
“Technology has improved the access, affordability, and the speed with which complaints can be redressed. You will not believe that we are serving about 56 NRIs sitting in different parts of the world and fighting their cases in India.”
— Nidhi Khare, Consumer Affairs Ministry Secretary
E-Jagriti not only resolves complaints but also refers cases requiring compensation or legal action to a litigation wing. Khare emphasized that pre-litigation hearings via video conference help shorten resolution timelines significantly.
The system integrates Consumer Dispute Redressal Commissions at district, state, and national levels, offering features such as online complaint filing, fee payment, case tracking, and AI-powered search of past cases. By deploying these new-age technologies, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs aims to strengthen governance and enhance service delivery for consumers both within India and abroad.
