NRIs under Indian probe agency’s scanner over fertilisers import scam

Their roles are being probed in connection with a case related money laundering into the fertiliser scam

Some Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are under Enforcement Directorate (ED) over their alleged involvement in the Rs 685 crore fertilisers import scam, the Indian Government informed the Parliament while answering a question of an MP on Monday.

Among the NRIs, the ED is probing the involvement of Amol Awasthi and Anupam Awasthi, both NRI sons of US Awasthi, MD and CEO of Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO). The role of other NRIs being probed are – Vivek Gahlaut, son of Parvinder Singh Gahlaut, MD of the Indian Potash Limited (IPL). Their roles are being probed in connection with a case related money laundering into the fertiliser scam.

In response to a question of Indian National Congress (INC) Lok Sabha member Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary mentioned the involvement of some NRIs in the scam but did not disclose their names, citing the ongoing investigation into the case.

“Some of persons are NRIs. Disclosures of further details of the case may not be in larger public interest as the same may impact the ongoing investigation in the case,” the minister said.

He, however, confirmed that the ED was probing the money laundering scam involving the IFFCO MD US Awasthi based on an FIR lodged in the case.

The case goes back to May 2021 when in an FIR the central probe agency Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) lodged named FIR against US Awasthi, MD and CEO of IFFCO; Parvinder Gahlaut, MD of the Indian Potash Limited (IPL); US Awasthi’s sons; Gahlaut’s son Vivek; Pankaj Jain of Jyoti Group of Companies and Rare Earth Group Dubai; and his brother Sanjay Jain, President, Jyoti Trading Corporation; and Amrinder Dhari Singh, Jyoti Trading Corporation’s Senior Vice President.
