Enhanced security measures in place amid Khalistani threat for Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
Bhubaneswar: A special tactical unit of the Odisha Police has been deployed to ensure security for the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) event scheduled from January 8 to 10. The deployment follows threats from Khalistani elements to disrupt the proceedings , reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are set to attend the event on different days, alongside approximately 4,000 Odia diaspora delegates from around the world. The tactical unit, equipped with advanced weaponry, communication tools, and specialized gear, has been tasked with thwarting potential threats, including urban terrorism and unrest.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Pinak Mishra highlighted the importance of the unit’s role, stating, “The personnel are highly trained and will be strategically deployed at the airport and event venues to handle any situation.”
Strategic deployment aims to safeguard high-profile event and VVIP attendees:
The threat stems from Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who recently sent an email warning of disruptions and referring to Bhubaneswar as a “rror city.” Similar threats were issued during the DGP-IGP conference in December 2024, which was attended by key national leaders, including the PM and NSA Ajit Doval
In response, police authorities have ramped up security with the deployment of 80 platoons of police personnel to manage traffic, control crowds, and maintain law and order across the city. Festivities at multiple locations, including Janata Maidan, will be closely monitored to ensure the safety of participants and dignitaries.
