The oneworld alliance is aspiring to a collective target of using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for 10 per cent of combined fuel volumes by 2030, deepening the alliance’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
oneworld brings together 14 world-class airlines – Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines and SriLankan Airlines, and more than 20 of their affiliates.
Expanding the use of SAF is instrumental in the alliance’s pathway to net carbon emissions by 2050 – a pledge made in September 2020 by oneworld, the first global airline alliance to commit to a common carbon neutrality goal. Support from policymakers and stakeholders will be critical in oneworld’s aspiration to reach 10 per cent SAF use across member airlines’ aggregated fuel volumes by 2030. Targeted investments, regulations, financial grants and government support mechanisms are among the enablers that will facilitate the industry’s transition to SAF.
oneworld and its member airlines stand ready to work with partners and stakeholders to reach the target, through the deployment of SAF that is available at commercial scale, affordable and certified under the schemes recognised by ICAO and relevant authorities. On 22 September, oneworld signalled its commitment to SAF through its support of the World Economic Forum Clean Skies for Tomorrow Coalition’s 10 per cent SAF by 2030 ambition statement.

The alliance and its member airlines are deeply committed to playing an active role in advocating for environmental sustainability, through oneworld’s Environment and Sustainability Board chaired by IAG Head of Sustainability Jonathon Counsell and with representation from all member airlines. In August 2021, oneworld unveiled its initial carbon roadmap, charting the alliance’s path to net zero emissions by 2050. More recently, the alliance awarded scholarships to member airlines Japan Airlines and S7 Airlines for IATA sustainability training to support their efforts in registering for the IATA Environmental Assessment (IEnvA).
oneworld Governing Board Chairman and Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker said: “oneworld is strongly committed to playing a leading role in improving environmental sustainability and the 10 per cent SAF target that we have unveiled today further reiterates that commitment. Industry collaboration is critical for progress towards this important goal and we call on stakeholders to actively support the deployment of SAF technologies.”
