In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, 2025, India has launched Operation Brahma, a large-scale humanitarian mission aimed at delivering search and rescue (SAR), medical assistance, and disaster relief to its neighbour. The operation showcases India’s role as a First Responder in the region and reflects its commitment under the Neighbourhood First and Act East policies.

India rushes aid via six aircraft, five naval ships to support Myanmar’s quake-hit regions

Under Operation Brahma, India has so far deployed six aircraft and five Indian Navy ships, delivering 625 metric tonnes (MT) of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) supplies to Myanmar.

The first tranche of aid reached Yangon on March 29 via an IAF C-130J aircraft, delivering 15 tonnes of essential items including tents, blankets, medicines, and food supplies sourced from the NDRF and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The second tranche included two C-130J aircraft carrying 80 NDRF SAR personnel, along with 22 tonnes of gear and materials, including PPE kits, communication tools, gensets, hygiene kits, and medical essentials. These aircraft arrived in Naypyitaw on March 30.

India has reaffirmed its readiness to scale up assistance based on evolving ground needs. Operation Brahma underlines India’s rapid response capability, deepening its humanitarian partnership with Myanmar and solidifying its regional leadership in disaster response

Simultaneously, two IAF C-17 aircraft delivered a 118-member Indian Army Field Hospital Team, equipped with 60 tonnes of medical and surgical supplies. A 200-bedded field hospital in Mandalay is now operational, performing surgeries and offering specialized care, including women and child health services.
