Canadian authorities have recovered partial human remains from the Glanbrook Landfill in Hamilton, believed to be those of Shalini Singh, a 40-year-old Indian-origin woman who went missing in December 2024. The remains were discovered on May 21 during a targeted search of over 5,000 cubic metres of waste led by the Hamilton Police Service’s homicide unit, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

Singh, a mental health care worker, was last seen entering her apartment on December 2 and last communicated with her family on December 4. Her disappearance was reported on December 10 by her parents and her common-law partner.

Hamilton police suspect homicide; Singh’s partner uncooperative in ongoing investigation

Authorities found no evidence of Singh leaving her building, fueling suspicions of foul play. Investigators now believe she was murdered in her residence and her body disposed of via the building’s waste disposal system. Although her partner was located in Halton Region a day after the missing person report was filed, he has not cooperated with the investigation. Police confirmed he is known to them but has not been officially named a suspect or person of interest.

The landfill search began on February 24 and was initially scheduled to conclude by April 18 but was extended. Police have informed Singh’s family of the discovery and are providing assistance through the Victim Services Unit. DNA testing is still pending to formally confirm the identity of the remains, and the search at the landfill is ongoing. Authorities say the timeline for completion will depend on what future evidence emerges.
