Dangerous criminals inside Bengaluru Central Jail are being treated almost like VVIPs on vacation at some luxury resort, according to some videos that have surfaced from within, and seen as a major security lapse
Warning concerned jail officials of strict action, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Sunday, Novemer 6 sought a report from Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) B Dayananda.
The government had appointed Dayananda as the head of prisons on July 31 after the retirement of Director General of Police (Prisons) Malini Krishnamoorthy.
Earlier he was suspended as the Commissioner of Bengaluru Police following a stampede at the victory rally of the Royal Challengers on July 4, that resulted in the death of 14 persons.
The Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has assured the Home Minister of necessary action, and said the Prisons Department had begun investigations into the matter
The Union Home Minister said this was not the first instance that such incidents had come to light.
He claimed several officials across the state, including at the central jail, were suspended previously following reports of similar treatment to inmates.
In the video that surfaced yesterday, Zuhaib Hameed Shakeel Manna, an ISIS recruiter, was seen scrolling on a phone inside the prison. A radio or a television was heard in the background as Manna spoke to someone having tea
Manna had raised funds along with conspirators and radicalised Muslim youth and illegally sent them to Syria via Turkey to join ISIS,according to the National Investigation Agency (NIA),.
Another video showed Umesh Reddy, named in 18 rape and murder cases, using his two Android phones and a keypad mobile. A television was kept in his barracks. In 2022, his death sentence was commuted to 30 years of imprisonment by the Supreme Court following his appeal for clemency, claiming he was mentally ill. However, he was later found to be medically sound.
Another inmate, Tarun Raju, was seen in the video using a phone and cooking inside the jail. He was arrested in the Ranya Rao gold smuggling case while trying to flee to Geneva and later identified as the mastermind of a smuggling network
