Vijay Pal of Hardwar has filed public interest litigation (PIL), challenging the Uttarakhand government’s decision to open schools for classes 6 to 12 from August 2. The petitioner blamed the government for deciding to reopen schools at a time when the coronavirus pandemic was still raging. He also accused it of no prior preparation or planning.

The Uttarakhand High Court on Monday asked Vijay Pal to modify his petition, which will now be heard on August 4.

This is in the backdrop of a warning already been issued regarding the possibility of children being affected in the third wave of Covid-19. The petition further alleged that while the health services for adults in the state lack in many respects, the situation is even worse for children. As a result, the parents are a worried lot, the petition said.

He felt that if the children got infected, parents in remote areas would be exposed to a huge risk due to poor financial conditions and lack of health services. Hence it sought a stay on the decision of the government, but schools in Uttarakhand reopened for classes 9 to 12 on Monday, albeit to a very thin attendance. However, most of the private schools in Dehradun remained closed.

Covid protocol like sanitisation of the premises, thermal screening of students and social distancing were strictly followed in schools that reopened.

On Monday, the Uttarakhand High Court asked Vijay Pal to modify his petition, which will now be heard on August 4.
