New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will host the Indian Asian Games contingent on October 10 after their return, following their momentous national achievement of over 100 medal haul at Hangzhou in China, a PTI report in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says.
India’s Asian Games 2023 medal tally now stands at 100 medals – 25 gold, 35 silver and 40 bronze.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said: “A momentous achievement for India at the Asian Games! The people of India are thrilled that we have reached a remarkable milestone of 100 medals.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to our phenomenal athletes whose efforts have led to this historic milestone for India. Every awe-inspiring performance has made history and filled our hearts with pride.”
The PM said he looked forward to hosting the Asian Games contingent on the 10th and interacting with the athletes.
The Indian contingent claimed an unprecedented 100th medal at the Asian Games with a thrilling 26-25 victory over Chinese Taipei in the women’s kabaddi final here on Saturday, Oct 7.
This is the team’s third title triumph in the continental showpiece, doing one better than its runner-up finish in the last edition of the Games in Indonesia and fulfilling the country’s expectations of touching the historic three-figure mark for the first time.
At one stage the going was tough for the Indian women as Chinese Taipei pushed them to the limit in the final, missing out on the top prize by just a solitary point.
The Indian team showed nerves of steel in the last two raids to seal the contest in its favour.

A 655-member Indian contingent participated the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China. The 19th edition of the continental multisport event officially began on September 23 and will conclude on October 8.
The ongoing edition of the quadrennial meet was originally scheduled for 2022 but was postponed by a year due to COVID-19.
At the last edition, Jakarta 2018, a 570-strong Indian squad racked up 70 medals – 16 gold, 23 silver and 31 bronze. In Hangzhou, India prouduced its best-ever Asian Games haul at the continental event.
Over the years, athletics have accounted for the majority of India’s medals at the Asian Games – 254 from a total of 672. Track and field events will once again be the focus at Hangzhou 2023 with India fielding 68 athletes – the country’s largest contingent in any sport.
The Indian athletics squad in Hangzhou featured top names like javelin throw ace Neeraj Chopra, the reigning world, Olympic and Asian Games champion, Commonwealth Games men’s 3000m steeplechase silver medallist Avinash Sable and women’s hurdles sensation Jyothi Yarraji.
India are also fielding cricket teams at the Asian Games for the first time. Both men’s and women’s teams will participate. Football and hockey will also see full representation by India.
The boxing team, spearheaded by world champion Nikhat Zareen and Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, and the wrestling team, featuring Olympic medallist Bajrang Punia and Antim Panghal, were also among the medal winners
In addition to medals, Hangzhou also offered 74 Paris 2024 Olympic quotas – six in archery, 10 in artistic swimming, 34 in boxing, two in breaking, two in hockey, 10 in modern pentathlon, six in sailing, two in tennis and two in water polo.
