Highlighting Guyana’s potential to act as a bridge connecting India to Latin America, the Prime Minister envisioned deeper collaboration that would unlock mutual opportunities
Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to Guyanese parliamentarians to visit India, further cementing the warm relations between the two nations. His speech reaffirmed India’s commitment to fostering global solidarity and elevating its partnerships with the Global South.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi made history on November 21, 2024, as the first Indian Prime Minister to address the National Assembly of Guyana’s Parliament. The Honorable Speaker, Mr. Manzoor Nadir, convened a special session for this landmark occasion.
During his address, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the enduring historical ties between India and Guyana. He expressed gratitude to the Guyanese people for conferring upon him the nation’s highest honor, symbolizing their shared respect and friendship. Despite the geographical distance, he noted, a common heritage and democratic values have brought the two nations closer.
Concluding his address, he quoted the iconic Guyanese leader Dr. Cheddi Jagan: “We have to learn from the past, improve our present, and prepare a strong foundation for the future.”
Underscoring the shared human-centric and inclusive approach of both countries, the Prime Minister emphasized India’s guiding principle of “Humanity First,” which has inspired its leadership on global platforms like the recent G-20 Summit in Brazil. India aspires to serve as Vishwabandhu—a friend to the world—by fostering equal partnerships with nations of all sizes.
Prime Minister Modi also called for prioritizing women-led development as a key driver of global progress. He proposed strengthening educational and innovation-based exchanges between India and Guyana to fully harness the potential of their youth. Reaffirming India’s steadfast support for the Caribbean region, he commended Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, for hosting the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit.
