Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the state-of-the-art terminal building at Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna, marking a major leap in aviation infrastructure for Bihar.

The inauguration took place shortly after his arrival at 4:30 pm, where he was received by Bihar Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and ministers from both the state and central governments, media reports said.

With advanced amenities and increased capacity, Patna’s new terminal prepares for a surge in air traffic.

Constructed at a cost of ₹14 billion, the new terminal building spans 65,155 square meters and is outfitted with modern amenities aimed at easing passenger movement and enhancing the travel experience. The facility includes 54 check-in counters, five aerobridges, eight X-ray baggage scanners, five luggage belts, a VIP lounge, a cafeteria, and multi-level parking.

This upgrade will dramatically boost the airport’s passenger handling capacity—from 2.5 million to 10 million annually—and increase daily flight operations from 34 to 75. The terminal is now equipped to handle up to 4,500 passengers per day, significantly enhancing regional connectivity.

PM also launches ₹485.2 billion worth of development projects, including a new airport at Bihta.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi also laid the foundation stone for various developmental projects in Karakat, with a cumulative investment of over ₹485.2 billion. Among the key projects is a new airport in Bihta, about 35 km from Patna. Planned on a 116-acre site, the Bihta airport terminal will span 68,000 square meters and handle up to 3,000 passengers per hour—targeting an annual capacity of 5 million.

The expansion of aviation infrastructure in Bihar is expected to stimulate economic growth, improve connectivity, and support the region’s increasing travel demand.

Patna’s upgraded terminal and Bihta’s upcoming airport mark a new era of connectivity for Bihar.
