PM Modi meets Indian diaspora people outside hotel in New York

The United States is home to a large number of people from India either as Non-Resident-Indians (NRIs) or People of Indian Origin (PIOs). They constitute around 1.2 per cent of the US population.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted Indian Americans outside the hotel where he is staying in New York, news agency ANI reported.

A large number of Indian Americans had gathered outside the hotel on Friday evening. The Indian Prime Minister arrived in US on a three-day visit on Wednesday. He received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora to which he hailed the Indian community’s presence in US as India’s strength.

“Grateful to the Indian community in Washington DC for the warm welcome. Our diaspora is our strength. It is commendable how the Indian diaspora has distinguished itself across the world,” tweeted PM Modi soon after touching down the US.

In New New York PM Modi would address the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

His US visit would conclude after the UNGA meeting on Saturday (September 25, 2021). ‘Building Resilience through hope to recover from COVID-19, rebuild sustainably, respond to the needs of the planet, respect the rights of people, and revitalise the United Nations is the theme of this year’s UNGA debate.

Earlier, PM Modi met with US President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris. He also met Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison.
