The recent meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a delegation from the US Congress, led by Indian-origin lawmaker Ro Khanna, has been celebrated by the Indian diaspora in the United States. This meeting is being hailed as a significant step that solidifies ties and emphasizes a unique vision to enhance the India-US bilateral relationship, according to a report by indiatvnews.com.

The delegation, consisting of eight members and led by Khanna along with Congressman Michael Waltz, engaged with PM Modi and External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar in discussions regarding the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. The discussions highlighted the foundation of this partnership on shared democratic values, a commitment to the rule of law, and robust people-to-people connections.

Ronak D Desai, a legal practitioner at the global law firm Paul Hastings LLP, described Khanna’s journey to India as “historic.” He noted the poignant nature of Khanna’s return to his parents’ birthplace, particularly given his lineage as the grandson of an Indian freedom fighter who fought alongside Gandhi and even shared imprisonment with him.

Yogi Chug, a prominent community leader in the US, emphasized that the delegation’s visit has further consolidated the bilateral relations with India. Chug pointed out the delegation’s engagements in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and New Delhi, including meetings with notable figures such as Amitabh Bachchan and Anupam Kher, interactions with corporate leaders, and a visit to Akshardham.

The meeting between PM Modi and the US Congressional delegation, led by Ro Khanna, marks a pivotal moment that not only strengthens bilateral ties between India and the US but also reinforces the significance of shared values, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people connections in shaping the evolving India-US partnership.

Chug underscored the significance of such people-to-people interactions and cultural exchanges in strengthening the growing partnership between India and the US. He highlighted that these recent interactions, along with PM Modi’s visit to the US at the invitation of President Joe Biden, have significantly contributed to fostering this partnership.

Chug also highlighted the unique honor bestowed upon the Congressional delegation by their attendance at PM Modi’s address at the Red Fort on August 15. He expressed how significant it was that such an honor and visibility were accorded to the delegation during their visit.

During their visit, the US delegation also participated in the Independence Day ceremony, during which PM Modi raised the national flag. Khanna shared his sentiments about the visit on X, expressing his honor to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat on India’s Independence Day and lead the delegation’s participation at the Red Fort.
