The visit will include a state dinner on June 22. “The PM’s forthcoming visit at the invitation of President Biden, is historic. The Prime Minister and President Biden have together imparted significantly new vigour and momentum to our bilateral ties,” India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, said.
Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US will show that the partnership between the two nations is people-centric, people-driven, and good for the world at large, a top Indian diplomat here on Wednesday, May 10 said, as he termed the visit “historic”, a PTI report in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says.
“The PM’s forthcoming official state visit to the US, at the invitation of President Biden, is historic. The Prime Minister and President Biden have together imparted significantly new vigour and momentum to our bilateral ties,” India’s Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, told PTI.
“The visit will be an opportunity for the two leaders to spend time together, take stock of the progress achieved and provide guidance on the future limitless possibilities. The visit will also underscore that India-US partnership is people-centric and people-driven, and that it is not just for the two countries, but for the world at large,” Sandhu said.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in a statement said, “President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will host Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Republic of India for an Official State Visit to the United States, which will include a state dinner, on June 22, 2023.”
“The visit will strengthen our two countries’ shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific and our shared resolve to elevate our strategic technology partnership, including in defense, clean energy, and space”, she added
Modi’s state visit is seen in Washington DC as symbol of the deepening India-US strategic partnership, amid shared anxieties about China’s actions in Asia and beyond.
It is also an unequivocal signal by the Biden administration that it is committed to working with the Modi-led government, despite criticism from parts of the US political and media ecosystems about India’s perceived “democratic backsliding”.
The visit is expected to significantly focus on the newer areas of cooperation between the two countries, particularly emerging technologies, supply chain diversification and the knowledge partnership.
Although the Prime Minister Modi has travelled to the US numerous times since assuming office in 2014, this would be the first ‘State Visit’ – the highest level of diplomatic reception which involves a state dinner and official public ceremonies. His earlier visits were characterised as official or working visits.
“The leaders will discuss ways to further expand our educational exchanges and people-to-people ties, as well as our work together to confront common challenges from climate change, to workforce development and health security,” a statement said.
