- The controversy has also drawn reactions from local residents, many of whom are questioning whether the incident points to administrative lapses, political pressure, or systemic issues that allow influential individuals to obtain privileges not permitted under law
- For now, the district awaits the outcome of the inquiry, which is expected to shed light on whether the alleged misuse of police personnel was an isolated incident or part of a larger pattern of procedural bypassing
A fresh political controversy has surfaced in Kapurthala following allegations of unauthorised police security being provided to a US-based Non-Resident Indian (NRI), reported tribuneindia.com. The issue has prompted questions about political influence, accountability within the police department, and the potential misuse of government resources.
Former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) halka in-charge Manju Rana has accused party in-charge Karamvir Singh Chandi of arranging police protection for NRI Shamsher Singh Bal during his stay in the city between October 25 and November 18.
- According to Rana, two armed police personnel—reportedly equipped with AK-47 rifles—were taken from Kotwali and Sadar Police Stations without any official sanction
- She alleges the deployment continued for almost a month, despite the absence of administrative approval or legal basis
Rana claims the arrangement was made for personal benefit and possibly financial gain, suggesting it may constitute a violation of the Arms Act and an abuse of authority. She further states that after presenting what she described as evidence to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), she did not receive a clear explanation. While the SHO of Sadar Police Station allegedly acknowledged providing security personnel, he maintained that it was only for two days and not for the extended period claimed.
Karamvir Singh Chandi has firmly rejected the allegations, calling them unfounded. He insists that he neither arranged police gunmen nor sought unauthorised protection for anyone. The conflicting statements have deepened the dispute within local AAP leadership, adding fuel to existing internal tensions.
SSP Gaurav Toora has confirmed that an inquiry is underway. He stated that the department will act according to the findings once all facts are verified. The ongoing investigation aims to determine whether the deployment occurred, who authorised it, and whether any rules were violated.
