President Droupadi Murmu embarks on state visits to Portugal and Slovakia

Visits to deepen bilateral ties and celebrate key diplomatic milestones

President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu undertook State Visits to Portugal and Slovakia from April 7 to 10, 2025, marking a significant step in strengthening India’s strategic and cultural ties with both European nations.

A milestone visit after decades to boost ties with Portugal and Slovakia

President Murmu’s visit to Portugal from April 7–8 is at the invitation of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. This marks the first Presidential visit from India to Portugal in 27 years, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The last such visit was by President K. R. Narayanan in 1998.

During her visit, President Murmu will hold delegation-level talks with President de Sousa, meet Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, and interact with Jose Pedro Aguiar-Branco, President of the Portuguese Parliament

The two countries will explore new dimensions of their modern, multifaceted partnership across sectors including technology, trade, and culture.

Following Portugal, President Murmu will travel to the Slovak Republic from April 9–10, at the invitation of President Peter Pellegrini. This will be the first Indian Presidential visit to Slovakia in 29 years. She will hold bilateral discussions with President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico, and meet the Speaker of the National Council, Richard Rasi.

President Murmu’s visit underlines India’s growing engagement with Central Europe and provides an opportunity to broaden cooperation in areas such as education, innovation, defense, and people-to-people exchanges. In both countries, the President will also interact with members of the Indian diaspora, highlighting the contributions of Indian communities abroad.
