Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised the Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom for their contributions to society and global success, especially in technology, while also stressing the importance of legal immigration and the need to tackle illegal migration. He made these remarks during his address at the NDTV World Summit 2025, reported ndtvprofit.com.

Sunak, the first person of colour and a Hindu of Indian origin to lead the United Kingdom, said, “The success of the Indian diaspora both in the UK and the US, especially in technology, is evident for all to see. I come from immigrant parents and am proud of my ethnicity. The UK is very proud of its multi-ethnic society.”

Sunak says Infosys founder Narayana Murthy motivated him to pursue public service and political leadership

Speaking on immigration, he added, “There is an issue of illegal immigration. Many come to the UK illegally. The security and sovereignty of our country are very important.”

Reflecting on his family ties, Sunak credited his father-in-law Narayana Murthy, founder of Infosys, with inspiring him to enter politics. “He motivated me to pursue public service and politics. He said the best way to make a positive difference is to be in a position of power. He founded Infosys, which helped shape how India is perceived globally,” Sunak noted.

Sunak also spoke warmly of his mother-in-law Sudha Murthy and his wife Akshata Murty, saying, “I learned compassion and empathy from both my mother-in-law and my wife. Akshata and I set up a charity focused on education in the UK. She has made me a better human being, and I continue to learn from her.”

Sharing a lighter moment, Sunak reflected on his bond with India: “India means an enormous amount to me, and it’s equally important for the UK. Akshata is South Indian, and I’m a Hindu Punjabi — not quite like Two States,” he joked.
