Saudi Arabia has introduced stricter work visa requirements for Indian professionals, mandating a comprehensive verification process for their qualifications. This significant policy update, effective January 14, 2025, aligns with the country’s ongoing labor reforms under the Saudi Vision 2030 initiative, reported Travel and Leisure Asia.

Indian nationals seeking employment in Saudi Arabia must now undergo a mandatory pre-verification process to validate their professional and academic credentials. According to a circular issued by the Saudi mission in India, the updated regulations aim to ensure workforce quality and authenticity. The document specifies that “professional verification procedures for issuing work visas will be implemented,” highlighting the compulsory nature of the verification step.

  • India’s Ministry of External Affairs reports that over 2.4 million Indian nationals work in Saudi Arabia, making them the second-largest expatriate group in the kingdom

  • With more than 2 million Indians employed across Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait, these new regulations could significantly impact the Indian workforce seeking opportunities in the region

In addition to credential verification, stricter certification measures will be enforced for specific professions. These reforms are designed to enhance the employment landscape by reducing reliance on foreign labor, promoting local talent, and attracting highly skilled international professionals.

Saudi Vision 2030 and Workforce Reforms The new work visa regulations are part of Saudi Vision 2030, a comprehensive plan to diversify the economy, empower Saudi citizens, and foster a vibrant environment for local and global investors. Over the past six months, Saudi Arabia has been rolling out labor sector reforms, introducing measures such as more flexible employment contracts for expatriates and streamlined visa procedures.

Updates on Iqama and Residency Permit Renewals Apart from the work visa amendments, Saudi authorities have updated rules for expatriates renewing their Iqama (residency permits) and extending exit and re-entry visas. The General Directorate of Passports recently announced that dependents of expatriates and domestic workers can now renew their Iqama remotely, simplifying administrative processes for families residing abroad.
