District Judge Subramanian imposes prison term and $500,000 fine for rapper’s prostitution-related convictions
Sean “Diddy” Combs has been sentenced to 50 months in prison and five years of supervised release by Indian-origin US District Judge Arun Subramanian, following his conviction on two prostitution-related offences. The judge also imposed a $500,000 fine, the maximum permitted under the law. Before delivering the sentence, Subramanian highlighted the repeated nature of Combs’ offences and his history of violence toward former partners, noting that even after legal action and apologies, Combs continued abusive behaviour, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
Judge Subramanian emphasised that the sentence sends a clear message that violence against women will face accountability, thanking the survivors for their courage in testifying
Arun Subramanian, 45, was born in Pittsburgh to Tamil Brahmin immigrant parents and studied computer science at Case Western Reserve University before earning a law degree from Columbia in 2004. Appointed to the US District Court for the Southern District of New York by President Joe Biden in 2023, he became the first South Asian federal judge in the district. Known for his balance of discipline and modernity, Subramanian has handled high-profile cases with firm yet measured authority.
Subramanian’s early career included prestigious clerkships with Gerard Lynch, Dennis Jacobs, and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, followed by partnership at litigation firm Susman Godfrey, where he worked on antitrust, civil rights, and corporate cases. During the Diddy trial, he navigated complex issues of race, sex, celebrity, and violence while maintaining jury impartiality and court decorum under intense media scrutiny.
