Sikh NRI woman’s suicide in US leads to massive outrage; husband tortured her for dowry, not bearing a son

But before taking the extreme step, Mandeep Kaur released a heart-rending video narrating the excruciatingly painful details of her torture at the hands of husband, Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu.

Bijnore (Uttar Pradesh, India): Eight years of torture and abuse of a 30-year-old Indian-origin married woman in New York for dowry and for not bearing a son, compelled her to commit suicide on August 3, a report in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says. 

But before taking the extreme step, Mandeep Kaur released a heart-rending video narrating the excruciatingly painful details of the torture at the hands of her husband, Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu.

Shortly after the video went viral on social media, she was found hanging from a ceiling fan of the house in New York where she lived. 

Another video which purportedly showed the victim being beaten up, has also gone viral on the net which. News of the suicide has shocked millions of people in India and abroad, not to mention a massive storm now raging on social media. 

Mandeep Kaur is survived by her two daughters, aged four and six, whose custody currently is with Sandhu.

Many have questioned why Sandhu has still been allowed custody of the couple’s two minor daughters. Or why he is being allowed to plan Mandeep’s funeral.

American authorities have begun investigations into Kaur’s daeth. According to Instagram page @TheKaurMovement, the New York Police Department is investigating the case as a homicide rather than a case of suicide.

The Uttar Pradesh Police registered a case of abetment to suicide and domestic violence against her husband and in-laws. An FIR has been registered at the Najibabad Police Station of Bijnor in UP against the husband and her in-laws. 

Many have questioned why Sandhu has still been allowed custody of the couple’s two minor daughters. Or why he is being allowed to plan Mandeep’s funeral.

The FIR was filed by Jaspal Singh, father of Mandeep Kaur wherein he accused Mukhtar Singh, father of Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu, Kuldeep Raj Kaur, mother of Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu and Jasveer Singh, brother of Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu for the suicide.

A case has been registered in Najibabad Police Station of Bijnor District on August 5 at 6:33 pm under sections 306 (Abetment of suicide), 498-A (Domestic violence), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (Punishment for wrongful confinement) and Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, a police official said.

Speaking to ANI, the victim’s sister Kuldeep Kaur divulged the horrific details of what Mandeep went through on a daily basis for nearly eight years.  

“My sister was married in February 2015. Soon, they went to New York and he started torturing her. He wanted a son and Rs 50 lakh in dowry,” said Kuldeep Kaur.

Social media platforms went berserk after the incident was reported. Many users questioned why the two daughters are still with him (Sandhu)? While the deceased’s husband and daughters are currently in Richmond Hill, New York, his parents and other family members are from Bijnore, in Uttar Pradesh, India

In one of the videos posted by the user, Mandeep is heard narrating her daily ordeal. She said that she had tried her best for 8 years and hoped that one day everything would be fine. She charged her husband with extra-marital affairs and daily beatings in an inebriated state. All through the video, she was seen sobbing and saying how she couldn’t take being abused anymore, just before she committed suicide.
