The Sri Lankan Navy detained 10 Indian fishermen and seized their fishing trawler on Sunday night, accusing them of poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters. The arrested fishermen were among over 500 who had set sail from Mandapam fishing harbour in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

The detained fishermen were produced in court and sent to Vavuniya prison

According to Sri Lankan authorities, the captured fishermen and their boat were taken to Thalpadu Pier in Mannar and handed over to the local fisheries inspector for further legal proceedings. Following a court hearing, they were remanded in judicial custody and lodged in Vavuniya prison.

Tamil political leaders demand immediate intervention to secure the fishermen’s release

The Sri Lankan Navy has detained a total of 74 Indian fishermen and seized eight boats this year. Tamil Manila Congress leader G K Vasan condemned the latest arrests, urging both the Tamil Nadu and central governments to intervene. He stated that the frequent arrests and confiscation of boats have instilled fear among fishermen, limiting their ability to venture into the sea.
