Punjabi diaspora from Europe rallies behind Karanbir Singh Burj, calling the election crucial for Punjab’s stability and growth
As the Taran Taran bypoll gains momentum, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from across Europe have returned home to campaign for Congress candidate Karanbir Singh Burj. Many of them hail from Taran Taran and neighbouring districts and see the bypoll as a defining moment for Punjab’s political and economic direction ahead of the 2027 assembly elections, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.
The visiting NRIs say their support for Burj stems from a shared belief that only a stable, development-oriented government can restore investor confidence and bring progress to Punjab
“We are here not just to back a candidate, but to ensure Punjab doesn’t slip further into instability,” said Balwinder Singh from Germany. “If people vote for moderation and progress, it will inspire more NRIs to invest in Punjab’s growth.”
Ausaf Khan, who travelled from Austria to support his Punjabi friends, urged the state government to revive the NRI Sabha — once a vital bridge between the diaspora and local administration. “The Sabha has become defunct. It needs a clear mandate to address NRI grievances and promote investment, not just photo opportunities,” he said.
Many NRIs expressed deep frustration over bureaucratic hurdles and government inaction, which they say discourage them from investing in Punjab’s future.
“We want to invest in education, healthcare, and industry, which will help Punjab and our families prosper, but the red tape and casual attitude are disheartening,” said Sukhjinder Singh Garewal from Hamburg.
Garewal added that the NRIs are not only canvassing but also contributing financially to ensure Burj’s success. “We want Congress to return in 2027 and rebuild investors’ faith,” he said, while warning that any shift toward extremist politics could alienate the diaspora further.
The NRIs have been accompanying Burj during rallies, engaging with locals, and encouraging their relatives to vote for stability and development.
