Tesla Model 3 price in India: Expected cost and key details

Tesla’s entry into the Indian market is expected to position the Model 3 as a premium electric vehicle option

PRAVASISAMWAD.COM

As Tesla gears up for its much-anticipated launch in India, reports from CLSA suggest that the base Model 3 will be priced between Rs 35-40 lakh. This estimation considers reduced import duties, road tax, and insurance. Despite the potential price cut, the on-road price will place the Model 3 firmly in the premium vehicle category, making it more expensive than many locally produced electric vehicles, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

Tesla Model 3 price in India will reflect higher costs due to import duties and taxes

In the United States, the Tesla Model 3 costs approximately USD 35,000 (around Rs 30.4 lakh), but in India, this price is expected to increase significantly due to import duties, taxes, and other associated costs. CLSA predicts that the Model 3 will be 20-50% more expensive than local electric vehicle competitors like the Mahindra XUV 9e, Hyundai e-Creta, and Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara. Even with reduced import tariffs—estimated to fall between 15-20%—Tesla’s Model 3 will remain a premium purchase, making it less accessible for price-sensitive Indian buyers.

Local manufacturing could be Tesla’s key to reducing prices in India

To tackle high costs, Tesla may pursue local manufacturing in India. Under the India EV policy, manufacturers who invest over Rs 4,150 crore and commit to producing 8,000 units annually could benefit from reduced import duties—dropping to 15%.

This localized approach would allow Tesla to lower prices and broaden its consumer base. Without this investment, import costs will continue to drive prices higher, limiting Tesla’s ability to capture the mass-market segment in India.

Pricing strategy will play a crucial role in Tesla’s Indian market success

CLSA draws a parallel between Tesla’s pricing challenge and the Harley-Davidson X440 in India’s motorbike market. With a price tag 20% higher than the Royal Enfield Classic 350, Harley-Davidson only sells 1,500 units monthly, while Royal Enfield moves 28,000 units. This comparison underscores the price sensitivity of Indian consumers—a significant factor Tesla must address to succeed in India. Without competitive pricing, Tesla’s growth in the Indian EV market could be limited.

Tesla’s India operations will begin in key markets like Delhi and Mumbai

Despite pricing concerns, Tesla is moving ahead with its India expansion. The company has started hiring staff for crucial positions, indicating that operations could commence soon. Delhi and Mumbai are expected to be the initial hubs for Tesla’s Indian operations, laying the foundation for the company’s broader market reach and growth strategy.
