CLSA predicts that the Model 3 will be 20-50% more expensive than local electric vehicle competitors like the Mahindra XUV 9e, Hyundai e-Creta, and Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara. Even with reduced import tariffs—estimated to fall between 15-20%—Tesla’s Model 3 will remain a premium purchase, making it less accessible for price-sensitive Indian buyers.
Local manufacturing could be Tesla’s key to reducing prices in India
To tackle high costs, Tesla may pursue local manufacturing in India. Under the India EV policy, manufacturers who invest over Rs 4,150 crore and commit to producing 8,000 units annually could benefit from reduced import duties—dropping to 15%.
