The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) recently announced that all tourists on arrival to the island nation must hold a valid travel insurance policy. In a notification, the authority said that all tourist visa holders required mandatory Sri Lanka Covid-19 insurance coverage to be purchased online or on arrival.

All tourist visa holders travelling to Sri Lanka are mandatorily required to carry a travel insurance coverage of a minimum of USD 50,000 including cover for hospitalised treatment for Covid-19 infection. CAASL said that the policy could be purchased online from www.portal.pionline.lk/covidinsurance.

CAASL also announced that tourists from 31 countries including Australia, the UK, Germany, and the US, who are unsuccessful in making credit card payments for Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for travel to Sri Lanka, due to the ongoing upgrade and maintenance of the ETA front end system, will be issued on arrival ETA (at the port of entry to Sri Lanka) as an alternate channel

Sri Lankan passport holders were, however, exempt from this requirement. According to the notification issued by Upul Dharmadasa, Chairman, CAASL, the “Covid-19 insurance coverage is not required to board an aircraft but upon landing in Sri Lanka, if the tourist visa holder is not carrying the Covid-19 insurance coverage of a minimum of USD 50,000, he/she must purchase the policy prior to leaving the respective airport in Sri Lanka.”

In another update, CAASL announced that tourists from 31 countries including Australia, the UK, Germany, and the US, who are unsuccessful in making credit card payments for Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for travel to Sri Lanka, due to the ongoing upgrade and maintenance of the ETA front end system, will be issued on arrival ETA (at the port of entry to Sri Lanka) as an alternate channel.
