Even as the tropical storm ‘Shaheen’ made landfall some 150km away from Muscat, in Musanna, on Sunday (October 4, 2021) night, it did extensive damage to infrastructure and property in the capital city of the Sultanate of Oman.

In Muscat, the old city Muttrah bore the brunt of the cyclone as it caused extensive damage in the area and water entered the traditional Muttrah Souk.

Most parts of northern Oman were under the impact of the cyclone.

As a precautionary measure the authorities suspended movement on all major roads in Muscat and North and South Batinah governorates till the end of the direct impact of cyclone Shaheen.

“While the cyclone eye is approaching the land located between the governorates of North Batinah and South Batinah, and due to the expected heavy rain and winds accompanying it, it is decided to stop traffic between the two governorates,” said a statement from the country’s National Centre for Emergency Managment (NCEM).

As a precautionary measure, Oman on Saturday declared a two-day holiday for government and private sector establishments in the northern parts of the country. Southern parts of the Sultanate, Dhofar and Al Wusta, remained normal.

Relief and rescue operations are going on in Muscat and other affected areas.
