The upcoming London mayoral election, slated for May 2, has witnessed the entry of two independent candidates of Indian origin into the fray, expanding the challenge against the incumbent, Sadiq Khan, according to reports from PTI.

Tarun Ghulati, a 63-year-old businessman who launched his mayoral campaign during a visit to India at the end of the previous year, and Shyam Bhatia, a 62-year-old property entrepreneur, are the latest additions to the nearly dozen-strong candidate pool.

Ghulati, whose campaign centers around the theme of “trust and growth,” expressed concerns about the current incumbent’s loss of support and the perceived lack of inspiration from another major party contender. Emphasizing his status as an independent candidate, Ghulati aims to foster the free flow of ideas and policies without party bias, involving the public in decision-making.

  • As the official nominations for the mayoral election are set to take place in March, candidates must present their support base through signatures and deposits

  • The final list of candidates, including Ghulati and Bhatia, will be unveiled on April 2, just a month before the pivotal election

Addressing the pressing issues facing London, Ghulati outlines his priorities as making the city safe for all, revitalizing its mobility, leveling up for Londoners, strengthening communities, and championing the city’s interests. Born in Delhi, Ghulati has been a strategic advisor in London for over two decades and is determined to maintain the city’s status as a global leader.

Ghulati’s decision to launch his campaign in India is rooted in his connection to the country of his birth. He states, “India is my Janam Bhoomi, where I was born, and London is my Karam Bhoomi, where I do my work.” Drawing inspiration from his father’s service in the Indian government, Ghulati shares this connection with fellow Indian-origin candidate Shyam Bhatia.

Bhatia, a UK-born property businessman and founder of a private bespoke financial business, expresses deep concern for the current state of the city. Committed to addressing the challenges and revitalizing London, he emphasizes the need to overcome obstacles to restore the city to its rightful place.
