An NRI woman visiting Vadodara for her daughter’s wedding has reported a significant theft that occurred during a shopping outing in the city’s old quarters. The woman, identified as Sunanda Malusare, currently residing in the United Kingdom, lodged a complaint at the Wadi police station after discovering that her purse—containing both jewellery and cash—had gone missing.

Malusare had travelled to India to attend her daughter’s wedding, which took place on Friday. The following day, she visited several textile shops in Ghadiyali Pol, a bustling area in the old city known for its narrow lanes, traditional markets, and wedding-related merchandise. She reportedly purchased a selection of sarees before returning to her hotel later in the evening.

  • While packing her belongings that night, Malusare noticed that her purse was not among her items
  • The missing purse contained jewellery estimated to be worth ₹7.15 lakh and ₹41,000 in cash, making the loss substantial
  • Initially assuming it might have been misplaced in the hotel room, she thoroughly searched the space but was unable to locate it

It was then that she remembered taking the purse out during her shopping trip. The realisation led her to believe that the bag may have been stolen while she was browsing through shops in the crowded market. Following this discovery, she approached the Wadi police and formally registered a complaint.

Police officials have begun looking into the incident and are examining possible leads. Given that Ghadiyali Pol is often busy, especially during the wedding season, officers are expected to review CCTV footage from the area to identify any suspicious activity. Investigators are also speaking with nearby shopkeepers who may have witnessed the theft or seen someone handling the purse.

The case serves as a reminder for visitors and residents alike to stay vigilant in densely populated markets, where pickpocketing and bag thefts can occur unnoticed. Authorities continue to urge shoppers to keep personal belongings close, especially when carrying valuables or large sums of cash.
