As the UK release moves ahead, all eyes remain on the CBFC and the court’s decision, which will determine when—and if—Indian audiences get to watch one of Vijay’s most talked-about films
Actor-politician Vijay’s much-anticipated film Jana Nayagan has received clearance for release in the United Kingdom, even as its domestic debut in India remains in limbo due to delays in certification by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The contrasting developments have drawn attention to the regulatory hurdles facing high-profile Indian films, especially those dealing with sensitive themes.
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has approved Jana Nayagan for UK release, awarding it a ‘15’ certificate on January 6, 2026. However, the film’s scheduled Indian release on January 9, 2026, is under threat after the CBFC cited a complaint alleging that the film “hurts religious sentiments.” This complaint has triggered an extended review process, leaving producers and distributors uncertain about the final outcome.
Produced by KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan marks Vijay’s final on-screen appearance before his full-time plunge into politics, adding to the film’s significance and commercial expectations.

The producers have approached the Madras High Court seeking directions to expedite the certification process

According to their submission, the CBFC had already viewed the film on December 19, 2025, and had verbally indicated that it would receive a UA 16+ certificate, subject to specific cuts and modifications, all of which were reportedly implemented
The producers informed the court that an email received on January 5 stated the film had been forwarded to an examining committee following receipt of a complaint. Highlighting the high financial stakes involved, they told the court that nearly Rs 500 crore is riding on the timely release of the film. The High Court has since asked the CBFC to place the complaint on record, while questioning the urgency surrounding the proposed release date. A final ruling on the petition is awaited.
Meanwhile, the BBFC’s detailed classification sheds light on the film’s intense content. Jana Nayagan was rated high for violence, sexual violence references, and injury detail, with the board citing scenes involving beheadings, gunfights, terrorism, drug trafficking, and violence against women. The synopsis describes the film as an action thriller centered on a man who confronts corrupt officials and an arms dealer seeking to create chaos and division along social lines.
