A UK teenager, Ashir Shahid, has been jailed for 13 years after a car crash that killed the unborn son of an Indian-origin student. Shahid, from Windsor Road in Walton-le-Dale, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. His younger brother, Sam Shahid, was also sentenced to three years for assisting an offender by helping cover up the crime, reported news18.com.

The court heard that Shahid was driving a Toyota Prius at speeds between 58mph and 71mph (93–114 km/h) in a 30mph zone on dark, wet roads. Sentencing him, the judge said Shahid’s acceleration before impact was “akin to what you may see on a Formula 1 race track.”

Judge likened Shahid’s reckless driving to Formula 1 racing as tragedy cut short baby Olive’s life

Baby Olive, delivered via emergency C-section after the crash on September 29, 2024, survived just five hours and 38 minutes. “He did not live to see dawn. His mother never saw him alive. His life was snubbed out before it really began,” the judge remarked.

The court condemned the brothers’ lack of remorse, with the judge stating: “You seemingly have no moral compass… You disappeared into the night like cowards and then acted with breathtaking coolness, attempting to cover up the crime.”

Videos showed brothers driving dangerously, laughing, and singing before crash.

Prosecutors revealed disturbing videos from both brothers’ phones, showing them laughing, singing, and filming reckless stunts—including one where Sam leaned out of the car window while Ashir drove without hands on the wheel. After the crash, Ashir even searched online for “charge for hit and run human.”

A witness testified that the impact was so forceful that the Indian-origin woman was “thrown into the air for quite some distance” before tumbling into the vehicle. Doctors said her placenta ruptured, causing heavy bleeding, and although doctors performed an emergency C-section, her child Olive died within hours.

In addition to his prison term, Shahid has been banned from driving for 15 years and one month and must pass an extended retest before regaining a license.
