UK moves to mandatory e-Visa system for Indian travellers

For the global Indian diaspora, the change reflects a broader trend toward digitised immigration systems worldwide, with countries aiming to strengthen border security while streamlining visa processing

The United Kingdom has transitioned to a fully digital visa system, introducing mandatory e-visas for Indian travellers as part of a wider immigration modernisation effort. The change replaces traditional visa stickers or stamps in passports with a digital record accessible through a UK Visas and Immigration account.

For the large Indian diaspora and frequent business travellers between India and Britain, the move represents a major procedural shift.

Applicants will no longer need to submit passports physically during the application process, potentially reducing waiting times and improving efficiency. However, travel experts warn that digital visa systems also require travellers to ensure that passport information, biometric data, and online profiles remain updated to avoid entry issues.

The reform could have particular implications for Indian students and professionals, who constitute one of the largest migrant communities in the UK. With increasing reliance on digital identity verification, immigration lawyers say errors in online profiles or technical glitches may cause complications at border checks.
