In a significant development for Indian travelers and workers in the UAE, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been introduced at over 60,000 outlets across the country. Originating from India, UPI has gained popularity as a secure and instant payment system, utilized by over 350 million people globally.

This expansion, announced by Network International Partners and NPCI International, extends UPI’s reach beyond India’s borders, facilitating seamless cross-border transactions for tourists and expatriates with Indian bank accounts. The system, known for its QR code-based transactions, simplifies payments across a variety of sectors including retail, hospitality, transport, and supermarkets.

This move underscores a broader trend towards digital payment adoption worldwide, further integrating global commerce and enhancing convenience for international travelers

Representatives from Network International, NPCI International, and the Consul General of India to the UAE, Satish Kumar Sivan, unveiled the initiative at a recent event in Dubai. They highlighted the potential impact on the UAE’s economy, where Indian tourists are expected to exceed 5 million this year, alongside a resident Indian population surpassing 4 million.

Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International, emphasized the strategic partnership’s role in enhancing UPI’s presence globally, stating, “By expanding UPI payment acceptance across UAE merchants, we are not only offering Indian travelers a familiar payment experience but also promoting innovative digital solutions internationally.”
