Chandigarh: Gurujas Kaur Khalsa of the White Sun has won the Grammy Award for her chants in the album ‘Mystic Mirror’, a report in The Tribune, Chandigarh, says.
Khalsa won the Best New Age Album for ‘Mystic Mirror’ at the Premiere ceremony of the 65th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. The album contains shabad from Guru Granth Sahib.
“We just won a GRAMMY for our album “Mystic Mirror” in the New Age, Ambient or Chant Category. We want to thank the @recordingacademy not only for the beautiful awards ceremony, but also for all the amazing work they do on behalf of music creators,” wrote @WhiteSunMusic.
The three artistes — Adam Berry, Gurujas and Harijiwan — appeared on the stage at the Grammy awards decked in their signature white outfits.
While on stage, Gurujas said: “Thank you so much to the Academy; I’m going to cry. Thank you to everyone who helped create this album, thank you to our producers. Standing with you guys is such a privilege and honour. With that comes more responsibility to bring love and kindness to Planet Earth.”
They had won the New Age Album Grammy award in 2017 for their album ‘White Sun II’.
The group also features a noted Indian-origin tabla player from
Hyderabad in Telangana state India, Abhiman Kaushal. He currently works as a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The US-based group specialises in musical versions of yogic mantras has won the prestigious Grammy award in the New Age album category.
The Sikh members of the group- singer and songwriter Gurujas Kaur Khalsa and instrumentalist Harijiwan Singh Khalsa-both adorning Sikh turbans and attired in traditional Punjabi clothes walked on the stage accompanied by Adam Berry, the co-founder of the group.
Gurujas accepted the trophy at the 59th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles for their album White Sun II which was a hit in 2016 and was a top charter at iTunes.
“We just want our music to make something better for somebody somewhere and it’s our dream to see this world become a more beautiful place. For anyone who shares that dream with us, thank you, we love you and let’s do better,” she said while accepting the trophy.
The Grammy award-winning album White Sun II includes hymns from the Sikh Gurubani- Ik Ardas Waheguru, Dhan Dhan Ram Das Gur, Aap Sahaee Hoa Har Har Har, Simro Gobind, Gobinday Mukunday, Ajai Alai, Chattra Chakkra Varti, Suniai, Akal Instrumental and Hummee Hum Akal.
The group beat Enya and Vangelis to earn the Grammy in the highly competitive category.
