Indian American Impact, a prominent Democratic think tank, is facing backlash from several Hindu groups in the US over its selection of panellists for the ‘Desis Decide’ annual gala. The controversy stems from the inclusion of individuals from organizations that have allegedly criticized Indian-American candidates and officials, a move seen as contradictory to the think tank’s mission.

Key Points:

  • Discontent Among US Hindu Groups: Hindu groups are upset over the invitation of panellists they claim have attacked Indian-American officials.
  • Accusations of Bias: There are allegations of bias and ignoring the rise of Hinduphobia in the US.
  • Questionable Panellists: Criticism is directed at representatives from the Indian-American Muslim Council and Hindus for Human Rights.

The two-day event, ‘Desis Decide,’ organized by Indian American Impact, is set to begin on Wednesday. Deepak Raj, a co-founder and funder, has helped the think tank gain significant influence in Democratic circles.

In separate statements, various Hindu organizations expressed frustration over the inclusion of certain panellists. They argued that featuring individuals from groups that have publicly criticized Indian-American political figures undermines the think tank’s mission to strengthen the political presence of the Indian-American community.

Hindu Action criticized the event further by highlighting the lack of representation. They noted that the only Hindu organization invited targets Democratic members of Congress who support American Hindus, reflecting a broader issue of anti-Hindu bigotry within parts of the Democratic think-tank

“Impact’s core mission is building Indian-American political presence at all levels. It’s frustrating and confusing that Impact would platform organisations which have publicly attacked Indian American candidates,” said Rajiv Pandit, a board member of the Hindu American Political Action Committee, reported PTI.

Controversial Panel:

The controversy centers on a panel titled ‘Building Bridges, Amplifying Impact: Interfaith Advocacy.’ Objections were specifically raised against Safa Ahmed from the Indian-American Muslim Council and Ria Chakrabarty from Hindus for Human Rights.

Pandit pointed out various attacks on Indian-American political figures, accusing these organizations of double standards and xenophobic remarks regarding dual loyalty. Targets mentioned include prominent figures like Raja Krishnamoorthi, Sri Kulkarni, and Jenifer Rajkumar, among others.
