US’ new rule mandates biometric data for non-US citizens

Starting October 27, the US Department of Homeland Security will collect facial photographs and other biometric data from all non-US citizens at airports, land borders, and seaports to strengthen national security and prevent identity fraud

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a final rule mandating biometric data collection from all non-US citizens entering or leaving the United States. Effective October 27, the new regulation authorizes officials to capture facial images and other biometric identifiers at all US ports of entry and exit, reported gujaratsamachar.com.

The rule marks a major expansion of the country’s biometric entry-exit tracking system, previously limited to select pilot programs or airports. Under this rule, biometric collection will now be implemented at airports, land crossings, seaports, and any other designated points of departure.

The DHS said the measure is designed to bolster border security, verify traveler identities, and prevent visa overstays or illegal reentry by those previously denied admission

According to DHS, the biometric system will play a crucial role in identifying terror suspects, criminals, and individuals using stolen or fake travel documents. The department said it will help ensure that only verified travelers are allowed to enter or leave the US.

Officials added that by improving the accuracy of identity verification, the system would also reduce errors in immigration and traveler records, making border control more efficient and secure.

The DHS emphasized that the expanded data collection will “close critical gaps” in the existing entry-exit process, enhancing both national security and immigration enforcement capabilities.
