By honouring achievers from the global Indian diaspora and international community, India reinforces its enduring connection with the world
India has announced the Padma Awards for 2026, honouring 131 distinguished individuals for their exceptional contributions across diverse fields. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday, January 25, 2026, on the eve of the country’s 77th Republic Day.
Among the awardees this year are six individuals from the Foreigner, Non-Resident Indian (NRI), Person of Indian Origin (PIO) and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) categories. Their selection reflects India’s continued recognition of the global Indian community and international friends of India who have strengthened the country’s cultural, social and professional presence worldwide.

The inclusion of overseas Indians and foreign nationals in the Padma list underlines the government’s acknowledgement of contributions that transcend national boundaries. Whether in sports, arts, public service, education or social work, these awardees have helped project India’s values and capabilities on the global stage.
Instituted in 1954, the Padma Awards—comprising the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri—are among India’s highest civilian honours. They are awarded for distinguished service in various disciplines and fields of activity, without distinction of race, occupation, position or gender.
As India prepares to celebrate Republic Day, the Padma Awards serve as a reminder that excellence and service, whether at home or abroad, remain central to the nation’s spirit.
