PNGNRI study highlights key challenges and solutions for youth in Papua New Guinea
The Papua New Guinea National Research Institute (PNGNRI) has emphasized the need for a tailored approach to addressing youth issues in Papua New Guinea.
The study underscores the importance of investing in education, employment, and community engagement to create a brighter future for PNG’s youth, reported postcourier.com.
A recent article titled “Perceptions of Disengaged Youths in Alotau and Strategy to Address Their Concerns” by Hafford Norea, based on a survey conducted across 12 provinces, categorizes PNG’s youth into three distinct groups:
Engaged Youth: This group expressed a strong desire for government support and viewed the study as an opportunity to voice their aspirations for a better future.
By investing in targeted educational and employment programs, as well as fostering community engagement, PNG can empower its youth to contribute meaningfully to national development
Disengaged Youth: Displaying skepticism towards government initiatives, this group showed little interest in external support and relied on self-sufficiency for survival.
Limited Awareness of Youth: Often with limited education, this group participated out of obligation and lacked a broader understanding of national youth challenges.
The study explores these varying perceptions and recommends strategic interventions tailored to each group’s specific needs. Engaged youth require better access to resources and opportunities, while disengaged youth benefit from skill-building initiatives that integrate self-reliance with structured support.
For youth with limited awareness, increased access to education and awareness programs is critical.
