In a recent tweet, the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) said more than 1,000 illegal migrants returned to Libya.

“Record number of refugees and migrants return to Libya today (Sunday 13-06-21). More than 1,000 people were returned in two other operations in Zawiya and three in Tripoli,” the UNHCR tweeted on Sunday.

“The UNHCR and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) have provided medical aid, food and water to all the survivors before they were taken into custody by the authorities,” the UNHCR said.

The IRC is a non-profit organization in Libya.

The number of rescued illegal immigrants in 2021 is as high as 10,154, who were rescued from the Libyan coast. Among them 173 died and about 459 went missing on the Central Mediterranean route.

The country is facing instability since the fall of late leader Muammar Gaddafi. He was dethroned in 2011. From here started the process of illegal immigration to European countries after crossing the Mediterranean.
