India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has put the Boeing 737 fleets of Indian carriers on “enhanced surveillance”. The move comes after the recent crash of a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 plane crashed on Monday with 132 people on board.
Three Indian carriers — SpiceJet, Vistara and Air India Express — have Boeing 737 aircraft in their fleets. DGCA chief Arun Kumar was quoted by PTI saying: “Flight safety is serious business and we are closely studying the situation. In the interim, we are focusing on enhanced surveillance of our 737 fleet.”
The Chinese airline’s Boeing 737-800 was on way from Kunming to Guangzhou. It crashed in Tengxian County in the city of Wuzhou killing all 132 on board. Since then, China Eastern Airlines has grounded all its Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

The Boeing 737 Max – an advanced version of the Boeing 737-800 – had been in the news after two planes crashed. In fact, the Boeing 737 MAX passenger airliner was grounded worldwide between March 2019 and December 2020 – longer in many countries – after 346 people died in two crashes, Lion Air Flight 610 on October 29, 2018, and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 on March 10, 2019. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) resisted grounding the aircraft until March 13, 2019, when it received evidence of accident similarities. By then, 51 other regulators had already grounded the plane, and by March 18, 2019, all 387 aircraft in service were grounded.
