Indian domestic air travellers cross 1cr in March 2022

As per the latest traffic data, there has been promising growth in domestic passenger numbers. While Indian domestic carried 233.83 lakh passengers in the January to March quarter in 2021, the figure increased to 248.00 lakh in the same period in 2022, registering a growth of 6.06 per cent in passenger traffic. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) recently released figures for March 2022 which show that domestic passenger numbers crossed the one-crore mark in March 2022 for the first time this year. Domestic carriers carried 106.96 lakh passengers in March compared to 76.96 lakh in the month of February.

The March 2022 figures are one of the highest numbers in the domestic aviation sector since the beginning of the global pandemic.

All the leading airlines posted PLF above 80 per cent in March this year, with SpiceJet leading the pack with 86.9 per cent, followed by Vistara 86.1 per cent, Air India 85 per cent, GoFirst 81.4 per cent, AirAsia 81.3 per cent, and IndiGo 81 per cent. Of the total traffic, IndiGo continued to maintain the bulk of the market share in the domestic sector with 53.9 per cent

Air traveller numbers had crossed the one crore mark in November and December 2021. As per the latest traffic data, there has been promising growth in domestic passenger numbers. While Indian domestic carried 233.83 lakh passengers in the January to March quarter in 2021, the figure increased to 248.00 lakh in the same period in 2022, registering a growth of 6.06 per cent in passenger traffic. Compared to March 2021, the growth in March 2022 has been around 37 per cent.

The increasing demand for domestic seats has also reflected positively in the Passenger Load Factors (PLF) of domestic carriers. All the leading airlines posted PLF above 80 per cent in March this year, with SpiceJet leading the pack with 86.9 per cent, followed by Vistara 86.1 per cent, Air India 85 per cent, GoFirst 81.4 per cent, AirAsia 81.3 per cent, and IndiGo 81 per cent. Of the total traffic, IndiGo continued to maintain the bulk of the market share in the domestic sector with 53.9 per cent.
